What to Know Before You Buy
All models do not work with every system. Systems with whole house heat-pumps, dehumidifiers, and ventilations systems will mostly only work with the higher-end smart thermostat models. It is always best to check the thermostats company's compatibility online before purchasing.
If you have more than one climate-controlled zone, you will need a separate smart thermostat for that area. Even with all the different sensors, for each climate controlled area, you will need it's own smart thermostat.
The other thing to be aware of is your wiring, we at 1-800-Plumber +Air & Electric can answer all your questions about wiring, but you should be aware before you make a purchase what kind of wiring you have. If your current thermostat's wiring does not include a C wire (most of the time it is blue) you will have to choose which smart thermostat carefully to make sure it is compatible. Can I Install a Smart Thermostat on my Own?
If you are a strong DIY type, you can, and there are probably instructions with the Smart Thermostat you bought. And if you do decide to do it on your own, make sure to turn off your HVAC system at the breaker panel, and then double check that you turned off the breaker. Some HVAC systems have multiple breakers.
Some older model battery-powered thermostats may still appear to be on even after you have turned off all the breakers. We recommend that if you are installing it on your own, try to turn your system on. If your thermostat is still lit up like it is on, wait and listen to hear if your system kicks on and double check that everything is actually off.
