What is a Ductless Mini Split?: Everything You Need to Know

What is a ductless mini split? It's one of the most efficient and non-imposing air conditioning systems there is.

How do ductless mini splits work? For that, you'll have to keep reading.

This short, 5-minute read explains everything you need to know about ductless mini splits. This includes their main advantages and disadvantages over other AC systems.

Find the answers to all your questions about mini split systems right here.

How Do Ductless Mini Splits Work?

Each indoor unit contains a fan and evaporator coils. The fan blows the warm indoor air through these evaporator coils, sending the cooled air into the room.

Then, the refrigerant in the evaporator coils pumps the heat is absorbed from the indoor air out to the outdoor unit. Lastly, the outdoor unit's fan simply blows the heat away.

Advantages

Here are the many ways this newer technology improves upon the central air conditioning system most of us are familiar with.

Energy/Cooling Efficiency

First off, the system itself is far more efficient than central AC in every situation. For example, if you have uninhabited rooms that currently don't need cooling, you can simply turn off that room's indoor unit. You only spend energy cooling the rooms that need to be cooled.

All you could do with central air conditioning is to shut the vent in that room. But the fan of the central AC's indoor unit will still be working just as hard. Plus, some amount of cooled air will still leak into that room through the shut vent, wasting energy.

Speaking of leaks, ducts are notorious for leaking energy, especially if they aren't properly insulated. Typical homes lose 20% of conditioned air to duct leaks.

But even with well-insulated ducts, the air loses some of its conditioned temperature by the time it gets to each room. This can't happen with ductless mini splits.

Furthermore, inhabitants in each room can choose their own temperature settings. Thus, they don't have to rely on one thermostat in a completely different room.

Ease of Installation

Mini-splits are much more convenient to install. There are no large ducts to worry about, only small tubes through small holes in the wall. Also, homes that have no room for ducts still have room for mini splits.

Disadvantages

There's really only one disadvantage to mini splits and it doesn't apply to everyone. Since you'll be paying for one indoor unit per room, installation can be very expensive for big homes with lots of rooms.

Of course, this also means that mini splits are far less expensive to install in small homes with very few rooms. Besides this, the money you save with this extremely efficient cooling system will make up for the high upfront cost soon enough.

Plugged drain outside of house. Came out the next day, showed us the video of the tree branches in our line, gave me a quote over the phone and I had them start work. Finished in a few hours and left with our system drain restored.

My daughter Natalie Permenter actually ordered the service. I'm at her house during the day to keep my grandson. I was very impressed by Emanuel, the plumber that cam. He was very professional and seemed to really care about his clients. Natalie tells me the lady in the office also showed professionalism and a genuine desire to help. Emanuel was disappointed that he couldn't get the job done on day one; but promised to come back the next day. True to his word he was here bright and early. I am so impressed to finally find a company that really cares about the consumer; not just the dollar.
