First off, the system itself is more efficient than a typical air conditioning system. For instance, if you have unoccupied rooms that do not require air conditioning, you can just switch off that room's interior device. You only spend power cooling down the spaces that you are occupying.

With central air conditioning, you can only shut off the vent, to reduce the airflow. However, the fan of the Central Air Conditioner's interior unit will still be functioning equally as if the air vent is open. Plus, some air will still make it into that area although the vent is closed. This will surely waste electricity and power.

Mentioning leaks, ducts are known for dripping, specifically if they aren't effectively installed. Normal houses lose 20% of air, due to these ducts not being properly sealed.

But even with well-insulated ducts, the air may warm before the time it reaches each room. This does not happen when you have a ductless mini-split system.
