Signs Your Pipes Need to Be Replaced

The consequences of damaged pipes can go unnoticed if you don’t know what to look for. If you notice any of these problems in your home, it is time to consider hiring a repipe contractor like 1-800-Plumber +Air:

  • Brown or Dirty-Looking Water – The water from your kitchen and bathroom fixtures should be clear, clean, and safe to use. Discolored or cloudy water is often an indicator of a burst pipe.
  • Drop in Water Pressure – Consistently low water pressure is another common sign that your plumbing system needs serious repairs. Water pressure drops can occur for a myriad of reasons.
  • Unusually High Water Bills – A sudden increase in your water bills could be caused by a significant leak or leaks in your home. This shows that repiping your house can save you money in the long run.
  • Strange Smelling Water – Dirty water also tends to come with an unwanted smell that can only be removed with new pipes.
  • Unnatural Sounds – When home plumbing works as intended, it should mostly operate in silence. Any discernable banging, knocking, or grinding probably means repiping is necessary.
  • Clogging – If water is repeatedly puddling above the drain and cleaners aren’t enough to solve the problem, replacement piping may be in order.
  • Age – New pipes may be necessary simply because of time. Pipes are generally made to last about 50 years. Once they approach that age, it’s best to repipe the entire system before they begin to degrade.

Understanding Repiping

icon for Fixtures

Fixtures

Plumbing fixtures include toilets, bathtubs, sinks, and water-using appliances. The more fixtures you have and the harder they are to reach, the higher your repiping costs will be. Similarly, large homes will have higher costs simply because you need more pipe to cover the distances involved.

Piping Type

Similarly, your repipe costs will be higher if you use expensive materials like copper piping instead of cheaper but equally durable options like PEX tubing. Rigid piping also routinely costs more to install than flexible PEX because it requires more removal of walls and floors, which increases labor costs.

For example, repiping the same 1,500 square foot home would cost twice as much using copper pipes as it would if you selected PEX.

Excellent! For some reason, I've needed plumbing help twice in the past week, after never needing help for years. Both times I put out requests through Thumbtack, Luay and the company has reached out very quickly. Today, for the 2nd time this week, i had a new issue and since it was Saturday, I knew it would be tough. But they came through with a quick appointment within 2 hours of my initial call. Thats impressive. Khaled came out and did an awesome job. Very quick, knowledgeable and professional.

Khalid from 1-800-plumber+air of Landsdale has done two jobs for me within the last week. One was replacing a pipe and expansion tank on my hot water heater, the other, replacing the shut off valve for my toilet. He did an amazing job on both. He arrived within the timeframe given, was extremely professional and thorough. I was so pleased with his work and the company that I purchased an annual membership (which was a way better deal than the membership I had with another company). If you decide to use 1-800-plumber+air of Lansdale you will not be disappointed.

Basement flooding and called the service. They dispatched the person on site for estimate on day 2. Next day technician Anthony Schultz came over and replaced the old bump and check valve. He did a good job. In addition he explained how flooding happened and made suggestions on avoiding future problems. Overall service was good, especially technician Anthony very honest. Communication from the company was good and kept tracking all status via text messages. The person who did estimate was so so.

Fantastic job.khaleb arrived right on time, got right to work after giving an estimate for what he saw might have to be done. He was finished in less than an hour and completed the task at hand. We had apparently had a screw lodged in our garbage disposal. It was something that I was unable to remedy after a good couple of hours in the afternoon. He was curious, polite and friendly. I would definitely recommend not only himself but this company to anyone who might have need of plumbing services. KenB, Schwenksville pa.

Home Repipe and Pipe Replacement FAQs

  • Which material should I choose for my pipes? Both copper and PEX piping are valid options for repiping projects. The better choice is in the eye of the beholder. Homeowners should weigh all of the factors before making a final choice.
  • How do I prepare my house for repiping? Before a crew arrives to repipe your house, homeowners should clear the area where the pipes are so no debris or clutter gets in the way of the plumbers’ work.
  • Will homeowners insurance pay to replace the pipes in my home? Homeowners Insurance generally covers accidental or sudden damage to your pipes, but general wear and tear may not. To better cover the costs of broken pipes, you should invest in dwelling, loss of use, and property coverage.
  • Is it worth it to repipe a house? Repiping your house benefits you in the present and future. New pipes are safer, improve water pressure, and increase the value of your home.
  • What does the repiping process look like? The process begins with a 1-800-Plumber +Air of Lansdale team inspecting the damaged pipes before creating a project plan. With a plan in place, the plumbing team will then remove some of the drywall to access the pipes and replace them. After testing the new plumbing system, the drywall is patched and repaired. Depending on the size of the project, the repiping process can take up to a week to complete.
  • How can I keep pipes in good condition? To keep your pipes working fully without any issues, you should keep debris or items (hair, flushable wipes, grease) that are likely to clog pipes from going down the drain and avoid using harsh drain cleaners. Also, be sure to insulate your pipes so they don’t freeze, and regularly check your water pressure so it doesn’t get too high.
  • How do I know if I should repair or replace the pipes in my home? Your pipes may need repairs or replacement if they repeatedly clog, produce discolored or smelly water, make strange sounds from the plumbing system, or suddenly increase your water bills without reason.
